Advances in clinical treatment of colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common digestive tract tumors, and its morbidity and mortality have been rising dramatically in recent years. At present, the main treatment methods for colorectal cancer include surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and traditional Chinese medicine. In particular, targeted drugs and immunotherapy drugs have achieved good results in clinical treatment, which can significantly improve the prognosis, prolong the survival period, and improve the quality of life of patients.

Forefront of colorectal cancer treatment in Japan

Although JCOG0404 couldn’t confirm non-inferiority of laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer to open, it could be interpreted it is acceptable. Minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopic, robot-assisted, and TaTME will probably continue to increase. Furthermore, the treatment outcome for rectal cancer will improve by setting of appropriate adaptation criteria of lateral lymph node dissection and preoperative chemoradiotherapy, and by evaluation of blood flow at the anastomotic site using ICG fluorescence imaging.

The front lines of the treatments for liver and pancreatic cancer in Japan

In the recent 20 years, survival rate of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma has improved owing to the development of owing to the development of chemotherapy using molecular targeted drugs and immune checkpoint inhibitor. Multidisciplinary treatment for resectable/borderline resectable/unresectable pancreatic cancer has also progressed owing to the combination of aggressive surgical resection and advance of systemic chemotherapy.
